Proelium No Hajimari: What was wrong?


I am not an expert, my opinion is nothing more than that, a simple opinion. So I can't tell anyone what to do, but I know what shouldn't be done.

The first mistake I made was not to publish a trailer from day one. The ideal is to publish trailer and put gifs. Gifs play automatically and you don't need to click them.

Other mistake was to not publish enough of the project on social networks. Some people pay ads, I can't do that. But doing development diaries and dev logs on social networks with enough hashtags is always a good idea. Not only publish the last day when you launch the game a tweet with the trailer. And if you tweet it is best to upload the video directly to twitter and not a link to YouTube, because it plays automatically.

When you publish the game make sure you add all the tags you can. And if you have a multi-platform launch planned try to do it from day one. If someone searches for example "android platformer pixel art" and you have published your game recently, you will probably find it in the first results. However, if you launch the Android game a week later, hundreds of games will be showed before yours.

When you publish a game it is very difficult not to have bugs the first day. But try that a normal player cannot find bugs in the first minutes. Is unavoidable that some players do things you never imagined and generate bugs, but that is different from the bugs in the colliders of the stage ornaments or similar things. Those little bugs that don't affect the gameplay but make it look less professional. Also don't let bugs that you think nobody will find. The first version had an error and once in a hundred times the labyrinth was generated it could fall into a loop and cause a stack overflow. And the first to find that bug ... was a streamer.

Another mistake I made was not sending the game to youtubers. I just sent it to the "subscribers games" section of a large channel that tested almost 20 games the same day and the game stopped working during live. It's always a good idea to send your game to small youtubers of few subs. It is difficult for a small game to be played by someone famous but if you can make several youtubes and streamers of 100-1000 subs play it is already something.
